Update: I added some more images today.

My Turn!

Hi, y'all!

Long jealous of those fellow Cebuano comic-book art enthusiasts who keep alerting me at http://www.istorya.net of new, fresh illustrations they've posted on their blogs, I've finally decided to do the same. However, instead of generating a new blog, I've decided (after much introspection) to continue posting in this blog
The Ink Slick blog. I have had a lot of reasons why I have chosen this old blog, the most important of which has been that it is probably older than theirs (bwahaha!).

Anyway, the work-in-progress (well, "design-in-progress", to be more precise) drawings I have posted below are inspired by Gener "Ner" Pedrina's Sandata character. Since these do not show the final look of my character, I have merely shot the pieces with a digital camera instead of scanning them. I saw Sandata a long time ago and was very much impressed by him. I'd always dreamt of creating my own Filipino superhero like Sandata and was surprised (and, again, jealous, to be quite frank) that Pedrina (and, perhaps, others before him) had accomplished such.

What I didn't like about Sandata though are those arnis sticks he's carrying. Now I know that arnis is considered to be an indigenous martial art and that for Sandata, seemingly Pedrina's banner superpatriot (I wonder if he's really the leader of Pedrina's local superhero team, Sandugo?), arnis sticks are perfectly appropriate. However, since I always believe that patriots ought to be concerned only with the defense of their country (let's debate the politics of war some other time, okay?) and that a shield perfectly represents such philosophy, I conclude that a banner supahpat (short for superpatriot) ought to at least carry a shield
as Marvel Comics's Captain America does. This is why my own banner supahpatI still have to make up my mind on his nom de guerrecarries a shield.

The Shield

I didn't want my banner supahpat to carry a shield that resembled Cap's shield too much. So I looked at our Philippine flag, saw that stylized sun, and had an epiphany.

There, I think I've said enough about the shield.

The Whip

Next, the fact that my banner supahpat carried only a shield still bothered me because he still resembled Cap in a sense. So I decided to give him an offensive weapon that had five-pointed stars in it, to make use of those stylized stars in our flag (you just can't do to one without doing the same to the others). Many,
and I mean many, ideas popped in my mind, the most embarrassing of which was a wand with a star on it (I seriously didn't know what the hell I was thinkin' back then.). At last, I had to settle with a whip made of indestructible metal (adamantium or vibranium ripoff!) with three cords, each one having a five-pointed star, sort of like a morningstar. Not only that, two sharp, five-sided solid pyramids protrude from the pentagonal centers of the star front and back.

The Nom De Guerre

I'm definitely giving him a Filipino name like Sandata, though I'm still trying to choose one from the following: Bayani, Bandila, Hukbo, Sandatahan, Martir, Kabayan, Makabayan, Kawal, and Sandigan. Ahh, what to pick, what to pick (sigh).

I suppose that after I settle with a name, I'll proceed with writing his history and creating his enemies (not necessarily in that order, hehehe). I still haven't even thought of making a comic-strip or a comic-book for this character.

Well, that's all for now, folks. Hope you enjoy the drawings.

Blessed Christmas and a Holy New Year!

SLICK INK COMICS NO MORE...The Collection Format, that is.

[entry: pusher]

Hi, y'all!

Yup, you read it right, we're replacing the collection format with the individual title format! Journey to New Earth, Memento Mori, up-and-coming Winged Harmony and future titles will each get its own books. Sure, pages may be a bit lesser, but, hey, so will the prices, which will surely attract even more readers!

Each issue of a title will at least have 12 interior pages, plus the usual other related stuff (like anime reviews).

Watch out for Memento Mori #2 and Winged Harmony #1 to come out anytime soon!

Slickcelsior! (Did I just say that? Can I say that?)
